There are many reports of American Bobcats mating with feral/domestic cats, resulting in kittens of wild heritage being born each spring. Even one of the TICA judges at a recent show commented on his own experience of witnessing such annual matings. Back in 1985, following an alleged pairing between a Coastal Red Bobcat and a short-tailed polydactyl barn-cat, Carol Ann Brewer purchased one of the resulting offspring, a male polydactyl kitten. Shortly afterwards Carol Ann acquired a further cat of the alleged same heritage and one other of speculative heritage. She referred to these as ‘Legend Cats’ as their true identity was unproven, and these provided the foundation of Carol Ann’s breeding program. Pixie, a female kitten born to two of these original cats, named because of her resemblance to a ‘pixie’ of folklore, became the namesake of the breed ‘Pixie Bobs’, and is foundation to many lines today. Whilst other breeders also experimented with breeding cats of legendry ancestry and have contributed to the breed, it was Carol Ann Brewer who took the breed forward to give it credibility amongst breeds and to be acknowledged by TICA (The International Cat Association). Pixie Bobs were only fully recognised by TICA (i.e. eligible for champion status) as recently as 1997. Whilst to date, DNA tests have failed to find any evidence of Bobcat in the Pixie Bob genes, one cannot disregard their utterly wild appearance; a striking similarity to the Bobcat in miniature, and the full history of the breed which can only be described as truly captivating and quite emotional (see ‘The Story of Pixie’ by Carol Ann Brewer) - A history which leaves us Pixie Bob lovers indebted to Carol Ann Brewer for ever.
